The West African Group (WAG) was created in 1992 by Jack Doherty.
Brent Hean (CEO) joined WAG as an equity partner and Sales Director in 1998.
From 1999 onwards Jack and Brent were able to attract the services of a top notch executive management team: Rob Macnab (Bsc Chem Eng), Willie Esterhuizen (Rubber Technologist), Margaret Wilson (CA) and Natalie Conde (CA) who remain part of the WAG team.
Mid year 2008 Metmar Limited, a JSE listed company, acquired the business of West African Group.
Grant Rosettenstein (CA) was recruited to replace Jack and his position as Chief Operating Officer of the West African Group. Appointed CFO wef 1 Jan 2015.
Tritia du Plessis (Polymer Technologist) was also recruited and her current position is Business Unit Manager: Polyolefins
Jack Doherty exited the business in 2010 and Brent Hean took over the position as CEO of WAG as well as became CEO of Metmar Polychem.
Effective 1st July 2013, the WAG division of Metmar was re-purchased by West African International (Pty) Ltd ("WAI"), the previous owner prior to the sale to Metmar in May 2008.
1 Dec 2013, West African Group acquires Frontier Industries, distributor of synthetic rubber, blowing agents and stearic acid
- 1 Feb 2014 WAG launches WAG Performance Chemicals, tying up distribution rights representing major offshore principles to distribute and sell chemicals into the coatings and adhesives industries in Southern Africa.
- 2 June 2014 WAG purchases BOPP Film business & creates BPS division representing Taghleef Industries in supplying specialised films into packaging industry.
- 15 July 2014 WAG is awarded the Distributorship by ExxonMobil for CAT branded lubricants in Southern Africa.
The West African Group and it's subsidiaries distributes directly and indirectly via it's warehouses, a range of virgin polymers, specialised films, synthetic rubber, natural rubber, fillers, engineered carbons, rubber chemicals, specialty chemicals, lubricants, coolants, fuels, absorbant and dunnage bags into the Southern African market. We have 14 warehouses in Southern Africa with 10 located in the 5 major cities within South Africa (Johannesburg, Durban, Cape Town, Port Elizabeth and East London) as well as warehouses in Harare, Zimbabwe; Walvis Bay & Windhoek, Namibia and Kitwe, Zambia.

West African Group (WAG) is a division of West African International (PTY) Ltd (WAI), a leading reseller and distributor of Polymer, Rubber, Fillers and specialised Chemicals. WAG was established in 1992 to focus on the distribution and marketing initiatives in the Southern Africa Region.

The company continues to expand operations through a diversity of core products with sustainable competitive advantages. West African Group (SA) has an extensive regional distribution network, with warehouses in Johannesburg, Cape Town, Port Elizabeth, Durban and Harare.

Corporate clientele include Dunlop, Firestone, Goodyear, Bandag, Nampak, Astrapak, Huhtamaki, Whirlpool, Mpact, Natal Rubber Compounders, Weir Minerals, Leader Tread, H & M Rollers and National Rubber Matmin.

The WAG Head Office is based in Durban with the CEO, Brent Hean with Grant Rosettenstein being responsible for most of the administration, logistical and finance functions.

The Boksburg site is ably lead by Rob Macnab and comprises significant warehouse space and a sales office.

We also have a sales office in Bryanston where the lubricants management team and Tritia Du Plessis operate from.

WAG has several Sales Representatives responsible for the sale of plastics, rubber and chemicals who are based in Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban and Harare and report to Tritia du Plessis.

We enjoy significant open account credit limits and consignment stock arrangements with major international principals, some of which we have held for over 2 decades.
